Now a days modern VMware infrastructure includes the below key points:
Data centers: It is the physical building which house all the infrastructure which provides the services to the company. Here the infrastructure consist of storage, server, network, cooling machine and the power supply. In a small company it is also called as 'server room'.
Servers: In data center there are only racks of server, that provides the computer processing for the application running, it is the compute layer. These are the physical servers that provides CPU, MEMORY, STORAGE, NETWORK to the data enter virtualization.
Storage: Each server have its own local storage, but in data center we implement shared storage infrastructure. It will provide high capacity, data redundancy.
Here the storage infrastructure consist of
1. Physical Disks
a. Spinning disk
b. Solid state drive ( flash disk)
2. The disk are in arrays
3. Depending upon the arrays it's either SAN or NAS
SAN is connected to a dedicated storage Network and in NAS it is connected to a shared storage.
Network: It provide communication among servers, storage, end user devices and external networks. Here it consists of:
1. Ethernet switches
2. Cables
3. NIC cards
4. Routers
In virtual environment we will find virtual switches, virtual NIC cards, virtual routers and virtual firewalls.
Virtualization layer: Virtualization layer is use to distribute resources efficiently. It is layer between computing and the application running on the layer. Generally we can run a single OS per machine which is not very flexible compared to virtualization. We may have unused hardware resources on the machine, and we are bound to use those due to it is with our OS. But a machine with virtualization layer we can create multiple machine with different OS and we can use those application that we want.
It creates a layer where we can run multiple machine with different OS on a single host or server.
This virtualization layer called hypervisor. In case of Vmware the EXSi or vmware vSphere(suite) create the virtualization layer
Virtual Machines: It is the virtual container for the physical servers on the virtualization layer. It provides resources to the guest OS.
Operating systems: Vmware support all type of guest OS like, windows XP,8,2012 R2, any Linux OS etc... It manages all the file system and devices and make it available to run use for end user.
